What I am reading...

Preach it, brother...

As you may be aware, Obama will be using the same Bible that President Lincoln used at his inauguration on March 4, 1861.

There are many historical elements to the upcoming inauguration and the entire presidency of Barack Obama. And now, your pastor can get in on the action.

26 Years

When I was six years old, Vanderbilt played the Air Force Academy in the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. They have not been to a bowl since...until now.

This coming Wednesday at 2:30 pm Central Time, the Vanderbilt Commodres will kick off against the Boston College Eagles from the ACC. I will, Lord willing, be there.

Year after year, expectations are high going into the season and year after year, each season end in heartbreak. Vanderbilt football teams seem to find any and every way to loose football games. Each football game ends up being one more week closer to basketball season.

This year, thank the Lord, it is different.

I don't know what it is like to root for my college football team in a bowl, but I will know after this Wednesday.

Go Dores!

True, true...

Anticipating an historic day ...

Shakespeare and Emerson...together again

"Well, whiles I am a beggar, I will rail,And say there is no sin but to be rich; And being rich, my virtue then shall be To say there is no vice but beggary"

-- Shakespeare: King John

"Without a rich heart, wealth is an ugly beggar"

--Ralph Waldo Emerson

Recession, anybody?

This past week, Mark Teixeira inked a pretty sweet deal with the New York Yankees (surprise, surprise). For the next eight years, the "poor" man will be making $22.5 million on average. This does not include a $5 million signing bonus and untold dollars in personal endorsements.

During the month of December, the Yanks have signed CC Sabathia ($23 million per over seven years) and A.J. Burnett ($18.5 million per over five). So in the next five years, the NYY will dish out $64 million per year for these three men to swing a bat or pitch every 4 to 5 days. This amount is almost three times the amount for the ENTIRE payroll for the 22 man roster for the Florida Marlins.

"These is hard times."

Christmas...

"The whole life of Christ was a continual passion; others die martyrs, but Christ was born a martyr. He found a Golgotha even in Bethlehem; for, to his tenderness then, the straws were almost as sharp as the thorns after; and the manger as uneasy at first, as his cross at last. His birth and his death were but one continual act, and his Christmas Day and his Good Friday are but the evening and morning of one and the same day." --John Donne, A Sermon Preached at St. Paul's Cathedral in London on Christmas Day, 1626.

Why am I blogging...?

In my short history of blogging, I have started (and stopped) three blogs. This is the fourth, and my hope is that it will at least last the winter.

I really have no business blogging as I usually have nothing of my own to say this is worth reading. I normally just steal what I think are brilliant thoughts from others and may comment on them if something strikes a particulary chord.

Honestly, nothing will be very much different on this blog either. So why am I blogging?

I follow many different blogs...some from friends, co-educators, pastors, and lonely people with nothing better to do with their time. However, until recently, I never understood how beneficial blogging could be for me, and for those that I work with on a daily and/or weekly basis: my students, collegues, church brethren, etc.

The following article inspired me to begin this process and, honestly, I am a little excited about it: http://www.desiringgod.org/Blog/1156_6_reasons_pastors_should_blog/

A very good friend of mine and former colleague finally pushed me over the edge after reading about this article on his blog: http://jasonsaxonsmith.typepad.com/

The article was written to inspire pastors to begin blogging if they have not already. However, when I read the article, I began to see that many if not all of the points that were made were extremely relevant to me as a professional educator and coach.

I hope that you will stop by and contribute your thoughts as well.
